How do you maintain proper temperature control for asphalt when using a paver?

Been workin’ with asphalt a while, and temp control’s critical—too hot, it burns; too cold, no compaction. I monitor the paver heat, but it’s treacky to keep it steady. How do y’all handle temperature control to get that even lay? Any tips?

Good question! I usually keep an infrared thermometer handy to check temps as we go. Also, making sure trucks are staggered for a steady flow of hot mix helps a lot. Do you use any additives to extend workability in cooler temps?

hi, Maintaining proper temperature control during asphalt paving is crucial for achieving a smooth, durable surface. I always keep an infrared thermometer handy to monitor the mix temperature continuously. Ensuring a steady flow of hot mix by coordinating truck deliveries helps maintain consistent temperatures. Additionally, keeping the paver hopper full during short delays can prevent the mix from cooling too quickly.

For sure, keeping asphalt temps in the sweet spot is key. I’m always running a temp gun and watching the mix like a hawk. Best trick I’ve found is lining up truck timing so there’s no long gaps, and keeping the screed heated consistently. Also, covering the mix in colder weather helps hold heat longer, especially on hauls. Every degree counts when you're chasing that perfect compaction.
