Hi all,
I’ve been researching forklifts and noticed they come with different fuel options. I know propane and electric are common, but what other fuel sources are available?

Are there specific advantages or disadvantages to each type when it comes to performance, cost, or maintenance? Also, do certain industries prefer one fuel type over another?

Would love to hear from those with experience—what’s your go-to fuel choice and why?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, Forklifts have quite a few fuel options depending on the job! You’ve got propane, electric, diesel, and even some running on compressed natural gas (CNG) or hydrogen fuel cells. Propane is a workhorse—solid power, quick refuels, and works indoors and out. Electric is great for warehouses since it’s quiet and has zero emissions, but charging downtime can be a hassle. Diesel brings the muscle for heavy outdoor work, but it’s loud and not ideal for indoor use. Hydrogen fuel cells are gaining traction too—fast refueling like propane but cleaner like electric.

What kind of work are you looking to use one for?

Hey Jared, great question! Besides propane and electric, you’ve got diesel, CNG (compressed natural gas), and even hydrogen fuel cells on the market. Diesel’s perfect for heavy outdoor lifting, but not great indoors due to fumes. Electric is quiet and eco-friendly but can be a bit slow to charge. CNG and hydrogen fuel cells are newer options, offering fast refuel times with cleaner emissions. What kind of work will you be using the forklift for? That can really help narrow down the best fuel type for you!
