Telematics worth it?

It depends on what type of company your running...and if you own or lease your equipment...but with the right partner they can be really great. One of the main things is to have the right size telematics company for your fleet of assets. There are companies that are set up for small, medium and large asset fleets. I recommend getting a few quotes from a few companies and comparing the up front cost and ongoing monthly subscription fees. There's usually some really good regional companies. If you find the right partner, for a fair price you can get tons of insights on your assets, diagnostics and preventative maintenance, theft prevention, and location/utilization info.

If you’ve got a decent-sized fleet, telematics can definitely be worth it—especially for tracking maintenance, fuel use, and preventing downtime. But if you’re only running a few machines, the monthly cost might not be worth it. Definitely shop around and see what fits your operation best!

Seems like telematics can be a game-changer if you’ve got a larger fleet, but for just a few machines, the cost might not justify it. The maintenance tracking alone could be worth it, though. Have you looked into any specific systems yet?

Good points all around! Telematics can be super useful for keeping up with maintenance, tracking fuel use, and preventing downtime—especially if you’re managing a bigger fleet. But yeah, for just a few machines, the monthly fees might not be worth it. @Crane Chris, have you checked out any specific systems yet, or just getting a feel for what’s out there?

I've been using telematics for a while now, and it's definitely worth it for managing maintenance schedules and fuel consumption, especially with a few more machines. It saves a lot of time on diagnostics and helps prevent costly repairs down the road. If you're running more than a couple of machines, it really pays off in the long run!

If you’re running more than a couple machines, I’d say telematics is definitely worth looking into. The maintenance alerts alone have saved me time and money more than once. Just make sure you’re not overpaying for features you don’t need, shop around a bit.

Has anyone explored buying hardware for telematics that is separate from the software? Meaning, if you have a large enough fleet, building your own simple software application (especially with AI tools now??) that pulls in raw API data from machine? Seems like one could capitalize the hardware and be free from ongoing SaaS fees (but more work to get an app running for sure...)??
