Mining excavators are built for one purpose: moving enormous amounts of material efficiently in some of the world's most demanding environments. The largest machines weigh hundreds of tons, use buckets capable of carrying tens of cubic yards of material, and are designed to work alongside ultra-class mining trucks.

But which machines are actually the biggest?

The answer depends on how you measure size. Operating weight, engine power, bucket capacity, and configuration can all change a machine's ranking. Some models are also legacy machines that remain important in mining history, while newer excavators have surpassed them in current production.

Here are 10 of the biggest mining excavators worth knowing, including several of today's largest production machines.

What Is a Mining Excavator?

A mining excavator is a heavy-duty excavator designed for large-scale surface mining, quarrying, and material loading. Unlike conventional construction excavators, mining machines are engineered for high production, long operating hours, extreme digging forces, and large haul trucks.

The largest hydraulic mining excavators can operate with buckets holding more than 40 cubic meters of material and are designed to load hundreds of tons of material during repeated production cycles.

1. Caterpillar 6090 FS

The Caterpillar 6090 FS remains one of the largest hydraulic mining shovels in the world.

The machine produces 4,500 horsepower and has a face-shovel operating weight of approximately 1,080 U.S. tons. Its standard face-shovel bucket has a capacity of about 68 yd³ (52 m³).

The 6090 FS uses two Cummins QSK60 engines and Caterpillar's TriPower system to help maintain bucket guidance and digging performance throughout the working range. It is designed for large-scale surface mining applications where high production is the priority.

2. Komatsu PC9000-12

One of the most important updates to this list is the Komatsu PC9000-12.

Launched globally in 2026, the PC9000-12 is the largest model in Komatsu's hydraulic mining excavator lineup. It has an operating weight of approximately 884–896 metric tons, depending on configuration, and produces 2 × 2,250 hp.

The machine can use a 46 m³ front shovel or 49 m³ backhoe bucket and is designed to load Komatsu's 240- to 400-short-ton mining trucks. Komatsu says the PC9000 can carry more than 80 tons per pass under appropriate conditions.

That makes the PC9000-12 an important addition to any modern list of the world's largest mining excavators.

3. Hitachi EX8000-7

The Hitachi EX8000-7 is the largest hydraulic excavator in Hitachi's EX-7 series.

It weighs approximately 843,000–848,000 kg, depending on configuration, and uses two engines producing a combined 1,944 hp. Bucket capacities range from approximately 43–45 m³ for the loading shovel and 48–52 m³ for the backhoe configuration.

The EX8000-7 is designed for ultra-large mining operations where continuous, high-volume material movement is essential.

4. Liebherr R 9800

The Liebherr R 9800 is another heavyweight in the ultra-class mining excavator segment.

The current R 9800 G6 weighs about 800 metric tons with a backhoe attachment and 810 metric tons with a face shovel. Its engine rating is approximately 2,984 kW, or about 4,000 hp.

Depending on configuration, bucket capacity can reach 47.5 m³ with the backhoe or 42 m³ with the face shovel.

Liebherr designed the R 9800 around large-scale mining, emphasizing long service life, high payload capacity, modular components, and production efficiency.

5. Komatsu PC8000-11

Before the PC9000 arrived, the Komatsu PC8000-11 represented the upper end of Komatsu's hydraulic mining excavator range.

The PC8000-11 has an operating weight of approximately 752–773 metric tons and uses two engines producing a combined 4,020 hp. Its bucket capacity is approximately 42 m³.

Komatsu designed the machine to work with mining trucks in the 240- to 400-short-ton class, making it a natural fit for high-volume surface mining operations.

6. Liebherr R 9600

The Liebherr R 9600 is the successor to the R 996 B and represents a newer generation of Liebherr mining excavators.

The machine has an operating weight of approximately 633 metric tons, produces around 3,350 hp, and can use a 40 m³ bucket in the configuration cited by Liebherr.

Its Generation 8 design incorporates technologies aimed at improving productivity, fuel efficiency, visibility, safety, and operator comfort.

7. Liebherr R 996 B

Although it has been succeeded by the R 9600, the Liebherr R 996 B deserves a place on this list because of its enormous scale and importance in mining.

The R 996 B had an operating weight of approximately 672,000–676,000 kg, depending on attachment, with up to 3,000 hp and bucket capacities reaching approximately 36 m³ in backhoe configuration or 34 m³ with the shovel attachment.

It is best viewed today as a legacy ultra-class mining excavator rather than a current flagship model.

8. XCMG XE7000

The XCMG XE7000 is one of China's largest hydraulic mining excavators.

XCMG lists an operating weight of approximately 673 metric tons, engine power of 2 × 1,193 kW, and bucket capacity of up to 36 m³.

The machine is designed for heavy-duty mining applications and incorporates systems for centralized lubrication, temperature management, and high-capacity material handling.

9. Demag H 740 OS

The Demag H 740 OS is a legacy mining excavator associated particularly with oil-sands operations.

The machine is notable because of its enormous size and specialized design for abrasive mining environments. It represents an earlier generation of ultra-large mining equipment and is better categorized as a historical or legacy machine than a current production excavator.

That distinction matters when comparing lists published years apart: not every machine that appears on an older “largest excavator” list is still a current-production model.

10. Volvo EC950F

The Volvo EC950F is considerably smaller than the ultra-class machines above, but it remains Volvo Construction Equipment's largest crawler excavator.

It has an operating weight of approximately 201,227–209,020 pounds and bucket capacities ranging from 5.1 to 10 yd³, depending on configuration. Volvo positions the EC950F for quarrying, mass excavation, and other high-production applications.

That makes it an important large excavator to consider, even though it does not compete directly with the 800- to 1,000-ton mining shovels at the top of this list.

Biggest Mining Excavators Compared

Size alone doesn't determine which excavator is best for a mine. Production requirements, truck matching, material density, digging conditions, maintenance support, and operating costs all matter.

Specifications vary by attachment, engine, bucket, market, and machine configuration. Rankings should therefore be treated as a size comparison rather than a definitive performance ranking.

What Makes a Mining Excavator So Large?

The biggest mining excavators are designed around production rather than mobility.

Several factors drive their enormous dimensions:

Operating weight: Larger structures and reinforced undercarriages allow the machine to withstand extreme digging and loading forces.

Engine power: Multiple engines or high-output power systems provide the hydraulic energy required for large buckets and demanding digging conditions.

Bucket capacity: Bigger buckets allow operators to move more material with each cycle, provided the bucket is correctly matched to the material and haul truck.

Truck matching: Mining excavators are typically selected as part of a complete loading-and-hauling system. The goal is to minimize loading time while keeping haul trucks productive.

Durability: Components must withstand long operating cycles, abrasive materials, vibration, dust, and demanding mine-site conditions.

Are Bigger Excavators Always Better?

Not necessarily.

An ultra-class excavator only makes economic sense when the mine has enough production volume, suitable haul trucks, infrastructure, and material conditions to justify it.

For many contractors, quarries, and smaller mining operations, a 200- to 400-ton excavator can be far more practical than a 1,000-ton machine.

The right excavator is the one that delivers the required production at an acceptable cost per ton—not simply the one with the biggest bucket.

How to Choose a Mining Excavator

Before buying or specifying a machine, evaluate:

  1. Required tons per hour

  2. Material density and hardness

  3. Required digging depth and reach

  4. Bucket capacity

  5. Haul-truck payload

  6. Fuel or energy consumption

  7. Hydraulic and component condition

  8. Parts and service availability

  9. Operator visibility and safety systems

  10. Total cost per ton

For used equipment, inspect the undercarriage, hydraulic system, swing bearing, final drives, boom and stick, bucket, structural welds, engine condition, and maintenance records before making a purchase decision.
